The Engineering Design Process
Every field on this site uses some version of this loop, whether it's designing a bridge, a circuit, or a piece of software. It isn't a one-time checklist — it's a cycle you go around more than once.
If you try one of the challenges on this site and it doesn't work the first time, that's not a failure — it's the design process doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Click a step below to see what it actually involves.
Figure out what problem you're actually solving, and what would even count as success. Skip this step and jump straight to building, and a lot of bad designs happen right here.
About "Repeat"
The arrow from Improve back to Ask is really the whole point. Engineers rarely get a design right on the first pass, and the loop almost never restarts cleanly from the top — a failed test usually sends you back to Build or Plan, not all the way to Ask. Redoing a step isn't a sign something went wrong. It's the process working the way it's supposed to.
